Evaluating Literature

18 Mar

Today we explored the concept of evaluating literature, we looked at how to create a detailed and effective evaluation and analysis. We used the attached video and powerpoint to summarise and analyse the first section of the Novel 1984. I have also learnt ways of making my writing from a Level 5 to a Level 6/7. Overall, it was a very successful lesson and I learnt a lot.

1984 - A Novel by George Orwell

After reading the first 3 chapters of 1984, I think that it
is a very interesting book and it is extremely gripping.
I find that the first few pages of the book were slightly
boring however, after I got through the first chapter I
was extremely interested and the book really seemed to
grab my attention. After reading the first 3 chapters, I
read the Summary and the Analysis where I picked out
words and analytical phrases that I did not understand
or had not heard of before.

The new words that I learnt were:

Dilapidated – in a state of disrepair
Totalitarian – a system of government
Loathsome – causing hatred or disgust
Decrees – an official order that has a force of law
Impoverished – to make someone or an area poor
Orators – A public speaker
Protagonist – leading part in a play or movie
Omniscience – knowing everything
Festering – to become septic
Entity – Something with distinct and independent existence
Irrevocably – to be changed or reversed
Touting – attempt to sell
Fervent – displaying a passionate intensity
Grotesque – comically ugly
Repression – forcing someone to do something
Unfathomable – incapable of being fully understood
Repositories – A place where something special is stored in large quantities
Idyllic – perfect, ideal
Instilled – gradually and firmly establish
Orthodoxy – authorised or generally accepted theory – doctrine

The Analytical Phrases that I discovered were:
– The first few chapters of…. are devoted to introducing the major characters and themes of the novel…
– These chapters also acquaint the reader with…
– Orwell’s main goals in 1984 are to depict the…
– Orwell emphasizes the fact that
– He also highlights the extent of
– …is the primary plot development in this chapter
– One of the most important themes of 1984 is..
– ….as seen in the stark contradiction between…
– At the end of the novel…
– The phrase “….” recurs throughout the novel…
– An important motif that emerges in the first three chapters of 1984 is that of..
– Orwell was inspired in his creation of …

I am currently really enjoying the novel, and cannot wait
to continue reading.

A Capsule in Time

11 Mar

We spent todays English lesson reading the instalments of A Capsule in Time – A book written by Martyn Bedford for Wellington College. Its a fictional book with a twist in the story line. I like the way how he has made our everyday school life turn completely upside down. It allows us to imagine what would happen if this was a true to story. I really like the story so far, I find the instalments very gripping and hard to take my eyes off. I have read the first 6 instalments as I type and will post a blog post later once Ive read all 11 instalments.

My English Presentation

Today,  I presented my English Presentation to the class. I spoke about my topic and how teenagers are portrayed. I explained my processes of researching and I also told the class how I planned to use my project in the real world and how I could incorporate my issue into real life situations. I will soon upload a video of my presentation being presented. Image

Is being cool that important?

Is being cool that important?

Modern day society is turning into a complete social hierarchy. As the world has progressed, it has become more and more important to care what you look life and to care what other people think about you. Will people continue worrying about their reputation? Will people still do all they can to be popular? Will the ‘uncool’ people continue to be bullied? Society is a killer.

The most important thing I have learnt in English this year

The most important thing I feel I have learnt this year is Analytical Phrases.

I value this the most because I feel they are key to success in English, if we start using them from a young age, then using powerful analytical phrases will become a second nature when it comes to taking serious exams. The more complexed and sophisticated the analytical phrases become, the higher grades will come with them. I continue to build on my glossary full of Analytical Phrases as I feel that help me the most in English.

RNLI SHOUT

6 Feb

I found this video for my project and I feel it is the most key piece of information that I have found so far. It is very powerful and shows a teenagers perspective on the topic. It is about a group of teenagers who have taken the time out of their own lives to help people at danger at sea, when the media portrays teenagers as only bad things, these teenagers feel worthless and this video shows the world that not all teenagers are bad. Very helpful for my speech and I am glad I found it!

Speech Progress

5 Feb

For my final piece of writing, I decided to carry on with the Persuasive Speech that I had started using Rhetorical Devices. My initial speech was a mere 100 words, but I am going to transform that into a proper speech that could be used at publicly, in magazines and could be presented to the government. Currently I have written 600 words and I plan to go into more detail. Will upload the final product when finished.
